 ***SPRAY TAN GUIDELINES***

Spray tanning uses DHA (Dihydroxyacetone), an FDA-approved ingredient that safely darkens your skin. The process takes 10-15 minutes, and you’ll be guided to a private room to undress comfortably. To get the best results, exfoliate the day before your appointment and shave 24 hours prior. Avoid lotions, oils, deodorants, acne treatments, or retinol products on the day of your tan, as they can affect how the solution absorbs, leading to an uneven tan. Do not shower immediately before your session, as this opens your pores and can impact the final result. Also, avoid Dove or bar soaps, as they leave a film on your skin, preventing the solution from absorbing properly. PLEASE RESCHEDULE YOUR SPRAY TAN IF YOU’VE BEEN EXPOSED TO HARSH SUN WITHIN PAST WEEK. Spray tanning over potentially peeling skin can lead to a disaster,

After your session, allow your skin to dry completely before dressing, and avoid bathing or sweating for at least the designated rinse time your technician recommends. The bronzing effect you see immediately is just a cosmetic guide and will wash off with lukewarm water—no soap, hair products, or scrubbing during your first rinse.

Classic Glow (8-12 hour rinse): For this traditional option, the solution must stay on for 8-12 hours to achieve your desired shade. Rinsing too early results in a lighter tan, while leaving it on too long can cause over-processing. After rinsing, your tan will continue to develop and deepen for the next 12-24 hours.

Rapid Rinse (1-4 hour rinse): The Rapid Rinse absorbs faster, allowing you to control how dark you want your tan. Rinse after 1, 2, 3, or 4 hours depending on your desired shade. After rinsing, your tan will develop gradually over the next 8-12 hours and continue to deepen up to 24 hours.

Aftercare: Wait 24 hours before using soap to allow your tan to fully develop. Use sulfate-free soap, and avoid Dove or bar soaps as they can strip or leave a film on your tan. Moisturize daily to extend the life of your tan. With proper aftercare, your tan will last 7-10 days. For best results, avoid scheduling your spray tan right before major events to give your tan time to fully develop.

Examples of Spray Tan Safe Products and Recommendations

BODY WASH

Native

Cetaphil/Cera Ve

Target Up & Up (skin brightening, sensitive, everyday cleansing)

Shea Moisture

(Body wash that’s ‘safe’ to use with a spray tan can increase the longevity of your tan - one’s that aren’t considered safe will strip the spray tan off in a day or two.)

MOISTURIZERS

Glazed Sunless Body Cream (in studio for purchase)

Jergens

Native

Australian Gold Moisture Lock Tan Extender

(Moisturizing helps your tan last longer by preventing your skin from shedding dead skin cells, which can take the tan with it - recommendation is twice daily after your spray tan.)

OH, DOVE NO!!! Avoid any soaps/moisturizers with mineral oil, alcohol (cetearyl alcohol is fine, common), sulfates, parabens, and strong fragrances. (Dove, Olay, etc.)

What to look for: Sulfate-free, natural oils (shea butter/coconut oil/cocoa butter/etc.), spray tan specific products such as ‘tan extender’ lotion. This also applies to deodorants and antiperspirants for your under arms!

Yes, who doesn’t love a ‘moisturizing’ soap but it can create a coating/build up before your tan, interfering with the DHA bronzing reaction, resulting in lighter tan. These soaps are also known for containing ingredients that are known to strip your tan.

BEFORE SPRAY

BLANK CANVAS!

Your skin needs to be squeaky clean—no soap, lotion, oils, or drama. If you show up with residue, you risk a greenish glow (and not the cute kind). So scrub up and show up fresh, because this tan deserves a perfect canvas!

MANI/PEDI

Maybe you have an event or it’s a holiday… and you need your nails done! It’s super important to have them done at minimum 24 hours before your spray tan.

LASHES

We recommend getting your lashes done 1-2 days before your spray tan appointment. This helps avoid any reactions between lash glue and tanning products.

RECENT SPRAY TAN?

Did you have a spray tan done within the past month? Make sure it’s completely off! The Billie exfoliating soap bar melts my tan away when I have a hard time removing trouble spots.

GETTING MARRIED?

Be sure to schedule any other prep appointments at minimum the day before your spray tan - this includes mani/pedi’s, waxes, and lashes. Once you receive your tan, try to fit at least (2) rinses in before your wedding to be sure any bronzer is removed.

EXFOLIATING

You exfoliate before a spray tan to remove dead skin cells, creating a smooth surface for the tanning solution to adhere to evenly, resulting in a more natural-looking and longer-lasting tan with no patchy areas; essentially, exfoliation preps your skin for an even application of the spray tan by providing a clean canvas.

Some safe exfoliants to use before a spray tan include:

  • Pink Himalayan salt scrubs: Made with natural ingredients like coconut oil, shea butter, and pink grapefruit essential oil

  • Oatmeal scrubs: Gentle and effective, especially for sensitive skin

  • Sugar scrubs: Made with sugar, extra virgin olive oil, and vanilla extract

How to:

  • Exfoliate 24 hours before your tanning appointment

  • Use a washcloth or nylon exfoliating gloves to gently scrub your entire body

  • Pay extra attention to rough areas like your knees and elbows

  • Avoid loofahs, which can cause streaking

  • Rinse thoroughly to make sure there is no residue left on your skin
