Your Spray Tan Appointment Is Over… Now What?
The Blissfully Bronzed Guide to Making Your Glow Last
You did the prep. You got sprayed. You walked out feeling approximately 87% more put together.
Now comes the part that matters just as much as the appointment itself: taking care of your tan.
Your spray tan will continue developing after you leave the studio, and what you do during those first few hours (and the days that follow) can make a huge difference in how your color develops, wears and fades.
So, save this one. Here’s everything you need to know after your Blissfully Bronzed appointment.
First Things First: Let That Tan Develop
Immediately after your appointment, your only real job is to keep your skin dry until your scheduled rinse time.
That means avoiding showers, swimming, sweating, rain, lotions and anything else that could introduce moisture while your tan is developing.
And yes, this includes washing your hands.
If you absolutely need to wash your palms, try to keep the water limited to the palms only and avoid letting it run over the tops of your hands or wrists.
Your specific rinse time depends on the solution and depth of color we chose during your appointment, so always follow the rinse time I gave you rather than assuming longer = darker.
Leaving an express tan on longer does not necessarily mean a better tan.
Your First Rinse
When it's finally time, hop in the shower and rinse with lukewarm water only.
Skip the soap, body wash, shaving and scrubbing for this first rinse.
Use your hands to gently help the cosmetic bronzer rinse away, paying special attention to areas where it likes to hang around, like the legs and stomach.
Keep rinsing until the water runs clear.
Then gently pat yourself dry with a towel. No aggressive towel gymnastics necessary.
“WAIT… DID MY TAN JUST DISAPPEAR?”
Nope!
This is one of the biggest first-time spray tan panic moments.
The color you see immediately after your appointment includes a cosmetic bronzer. Much of that visible color washes down the drain during your first rinse.
Your actual tan develops differently.
The DHA in your spray tan solution reacts with the amino acids in the outermost layer of your skin to create your longer-lasting color. That process continues even after you've rinsed.
So if you step out of the shower thinking you look lighter than expected, give it time.
Your color can continue developing for up to approximately 24 hours after your appointment.
Trust the process.
After That First Rinse: Moisture Is Your Best Friend
Once you've completed your first rinse and your tan has had time to develop, moisturizing becomes one of the best things you can do for it.
Hydrated skin = a happier, longer-lasting tan.
Apply a spray-tan-friendly moisturizer twice daily, especially after showering.
Drink WATER!!!
Dry skin naturally sheds faster, and when those skin cells go, your tan goes with them. Keeping your skin hydrated helps your color fade more evenly instead of becoming patchy.
Not sure whether your favorite lotion is tan-friendly? Ask me! I'm always happy to check it for you.
Can I Shower Normally Now?
Yes!
After your initial development period, you can shower normally, but your shower habits can absolutely affect the life of your tan.
For the longest-lasting results:
• Keep showers on the shorter side
• Avoid extremely hot water
• Use gentle, tan-friendly products
• Skip exfoliating scrubs and exfoliating gloves
• Pat dry instead of rubbing aggressively with your towel
Basically, treat your skin like you just spent money making it look fabulous. Because you did.
Can I Shave?
Yes, but shaving naturally exfoliates the skin, so the more frequently you shave, the faster your tan may fade.
When you do shave, use a fresh razor and plenty of lubrication. Be gentle and avoid repeatedly going over the same area.
Ideally, most of your shaving should have been done before your spray tan appointment.
What About Working Out?
Sweat and freshly developing spray tans are not friends.
Avoid workouts, heavy sweating, saunas and similar activities while your tan is developing.
Once your tan has fully developed, you can absolutely get back to your normal routine. Just remember that frequent sweating, tight workout clothes and friction can make certain areas fade faster.
Sports bras, leggings and other snug clothing are common culprits.
This doesn't mean you have to choose between being tan and going to the gym. It just means your most athletic areas may need a little extra love.
Swimming, Pools & The Ocean
You can swim with a spray tan!
But chlorine, salt water and long periods of soaking can shorten its lifespan.
If you're heading on vacation, moisturizing becomes especially important. After swimming, rinse off when possible, gently pat yourself dry and moisturize.
And please, wear your sunscreen.
A spray tan provides color, not sun protection.
Why Is My Face Fading Faster?
Completely normal.
Your face often fades faster than the rest of your body because you're washing it more frequently and may be using skincare products that increase cell turnover.
Cleansers, exfoliating acids, acne treatments and retinoids can all contribute to faster fading.
Don't panic if your body is still glowing while your face starts tapping out early.
When Your Tan Starts to Fade…
Eventually, every spray tan reaches retirement.
When you notice your color becoming noticeably uneven or patchy, that's your cue to begin gently exfoliating it away.
The goal is to remove the remaining tan evenly and give yourself a clean canvas before your next appointment.
Please don't continuously spray over layers of old tan.
Fresh skin gives us the prettiest, most even results.
So… When Should I Book My Next Spray Tan?
There's no rule saying you need to stay permanently bronzed, but if you love maintaining consistent color, many clients find a routine of approximately every 7–10 days works well.
The important part is properly removing the previous tan and prepping your skin before we start again.
Have an event coming up? Whenever possible, I recommend scheduling your spray tan about two days before the event so your color has time to fully develop and settle beautifully.
And Remember: I'm Here After Your Appointment, Too
Your appointment doesn't end the second you walk out the door.
If something looks strange, you're unsure about a product, you forgot an instruction or you're standing in your bathroom wondering, “Am I supposed to rinse right now?” — reach out.
I'd much rather you ask.
Every person's skin, routine and desired color are different, which is exactly why your spray tan is customized in the first place.
