Can You Wear Sunscreen With a Spray Tan? (Absolutely, and Here's Why You Should.)

One of the questions I hear all the time is:

"If I wear sunscreen, won't it take my spray tan off?"

The short answer?

No! In fact, you absolutely should wear sunscreen.

Let's talk about why.

Your Spray Tan Doesn't Protect You From the Sun

A spray tan may make your skin look beautifully bronzed, but it doesn't create any protection against harmful UV rays.

Even though your skin looks tan, you're still just as susceptible to sunburn, premature aging, and skin damage as you were before your appointment.

The color comes from DHA (dihydroxyacetone), a cosmetic ingredient that temporarily darkens the outermost layer of your skin. It has nothing to do with melanin, the pigment your body naturally produces when exposed to the sun.

So yes, sunscreen is still a must.

Will Sunscreen Ruin My Spray Tan?

Not if you're using the right one.

Many people assume sunscreen is what causes their tan to fade, but it's usually the ingredients in certain formulas, not the SPF itself.

Some sunscreens contain:

  • Heavy oils

  • Alcohols

  • Strong fragrances

  • Harsh chemical ingredients

These can break down your spray tan faster or cause it to fade unevenly.

The goal is to choose a sunscreen that's gentle on your skin while still giving you excellent UV protection.

What Type of Sunscreen Is Best?

I always recommend looking for formulas that are:

  • Broad Spectrum SPF 30 or higher

  • Fragrance-free whenever possible

  • Lightweight lotions or creams

  • Free of heavy mineral oils

  • Hydrating rather than drying

Sprays are convenient, but they can sometimes contain more alcohol, which may dry your skin and shorten the life of your tan.

A moisturizing lotion is usually your best bet.

Daily Moisturizing Helps Too

One of the easiest ways to make your spray tan last longer has nothing to do with sunscreen.

Moisturize every single day.

Hydrated skin holds onto a spray tan more evenly, while dry skin sheds faster and leads to patchiness.

Think of your skin like healthy soil. When it's hydrated, everything thrives. When it dries out, things start to crack and flake away.

Don't Skip Sunscreen to "Save" Your Tan

Trying to preserve your spray tan by avoiding sunscreen often backfires.

A sunburn causes your skin to peel much faster than normal, which means your beautiful tan disappears right along with it.

Protecting your skin is actually one of the best things you can do to help your spray tan last.

My Favorite Tip

If you're spending the day at the pool, beach, or on vacation:

✔️ Apply sunscreen generously.
✔️ Reapply every two hours (or after swimming or sweating).
✔️ Keep your skin moisturized each evening.
✔️ Drink plenty of water to help keep your skin hydrated from the inside out.

You'll protect your skin and enjoy a more even, longer-lasting fade.

The Bottom Line

A spray tan gives you the glow. Sunscreen protects the skin underneath it.

The two aren't enemies. They're the perfect pair.

At Blissfully Bronzed, I want your glow to look amazing, but I also want your skin to stay healthy for years to come. So wear the SPF, stay hydrated, and enjoy your sunshine safely.

Because the best tan is one that never comes at the expense of your skin's health.
